Everyday citizens can now change the lives of refugees through financial sponsorship! The U.S. State Department recently announced a new program that allows members of the general public to play an active role in refugee resettlement and provide firsthand support upon refugees’ arrivals in the U.S.

If you’re interested in joining the new Welcome Corps program or learning more about how to sponsor a refugee, here’s how to get started:

1. Attend a Welcome Corps Information Session

Register for an online introduction session to learn more. Sessions are held weekly on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. ET.

2. Create a Sponsor Group

Gather at least 4 other U.S. citizens or green card holders willing to participate in the program (sponsor groups must be 5 people or more).

3. Complete an Official Background Check

Each member of the sponsor group must pass a mandatory background check in order to participate.

4. Attend Welcome Corps Training & Application Support Session

At least one member of the sponsor group must complete program training and attend a session that explains the application process.

5. Create a Welcome Plan & Fundraise

Your group’s ā€œWelcome Planā€ should include how you plan to support your sponsored refugee upon their arrival in the U.S. You can also start raising sponsorship funds in your community!

6. Time to Apply!

Once your group has finalized your ā€œWelcome Planā€ and raised the required $2,275 per refugee, you’re ready to submit your application.
