What Is the UK ETA?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a new digital entry requirement that allows US citizens to enter the United Kingdom for up to 6 months without a visa. Similar to the U.S. Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), this system requires travelers to obtain pre-travel authorization which is then electronically linked to their passport.

Whether planning a vacation, visiting family, or taking a business trip to the United Kingdom, if you’re a US citizen traveling after January 8, 2025, you must apply for an ETA before your journey. The good news is that the process is straightforward and entirely online.

ETA Details:

  • Cost: £10 (around $13)
  • Validity: 2 years or until passport expiration
  • Processing Time: Up to 3 working days
  • Stay Duration: Up to 6 months per visit
  • Application Opened: November 27, 2024

Let Boundless be your immigration go-to, guaranteed approval or your money back.

Personal Information

  • Full legal name exactly as it appears in your passport
  • Date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format
  • Current phone number where you can be reached
  • Email address for receiving your ETA decision (double-check for accuracy)
  • Current nationality and any additional citizenships you hold
  • Passport number

Background Questions

The form also includes questions about your employment status, criminal convictions, or crime involvement. These questions help UK authorities assess eligibility. You must declare:

  • Any criminal convictions from any country (note: you don’t need to declare convictions for activities that are legal in the UK, such as trade union membership)
  • Any involvement or suspected involvement in serious crimes, terrorism, or extremist activities

Before submitting the form, you must confirm that your application is accurate and that any false information could lead to your application being refused. You’ll also accept the government’s terms and conditions.

Processing and Approval

Timeline

Rush processing is not available for the UK ETA, so be sure to plan ahead.

  • Applications are typically processed within 3 business days
  • Your planned arrival date in the UK must be at least 3 business days after your application submission
  • You’ll receive email updates about your application status

After Approval

  • Your ETA will be electronically linked to your passport
  • No need to print any physical documentation
  • Valid for multiple entries over two years or until your passport expires

  • Keep your confirmation email and ETA reference number easily accessible
  • Download or save a copy of your approval notice
  • Consider travel insurance that covers potential entry issues

Entry Requirements

  • ETA approval is a pre-travel authorization, not a guaranteed right of entry, meaning that border officials can still deny you upon arrival.
  • Be prepared to show:
    • Proof of accommodation for your stay
    • Return or onward travel arrangements
    • Evidence of sufficient funds for your visit
    • Any relevant business or study documentation
